Usually a reply within a day.

“I'm fine,” she says.

You can't be there every day. We can be.

For your mum or dadA familiar face, regular conversation, and something to look forward to each week.
For youReassurance that somebody has genuinely checked in, not just ticked a box.
For the relationshipWe always aim to send the same companion each time, so it becomes a friendship, not a rota.

About us

Why we started

An older lady and a companion laughing together over tea in a cosy kitchen

Ageing changes someone's world gradually. Friends move away or pass on. Family live further afield than they used to. Driving gets harder. A partner might not be there anymore. Loneliness rarely announces itself; it just quietly becomes the shape of someone's week.

Huddersfield Home Companions exists in the space between independence and isolation. We're not here to take over. We're here to be another trusted, familiar presence for the person we visit, and for the family who can't always be there themselves.

What we believe

Support isn't always a task being completed. Sometimes it's sitting down for tea. Having someone genuinely listen. Going to the shops together. Talking about Huddersfield the way it used to be.

Nobody should feel forgotten simply because they're growing older.

Not a hospital

We don't talk like one. Ageing isn't treated as something that automatically takes away independence, and companionship is never framed as pity.

A person, not a case

The people we visit are adults with preferences, history and personality, not cases to be managed.

Local, not corporate

Based in and around Huddersfield. You'll see us at local events and supporting local causes, not just on a website.

How we vet the people who visit your family

Face to face interviewEvery companion is personally interviewed before joining the team, never hired on a form alone.
Right to work, ID & address checksRight to work, identity and proof of address are checked before anyone joins the team.
InsuredWe carry public liability insurance. Companionship sits outside CQC's regulated activities, so we're not CQC registered, and we say so plainly.

Frequently asked

Questions families ask us

What's the difference between companionship and home care?
Companionship focuses on emotional and social support: conversation, shared activities, a friendly familiar face, rather than personal or medical care such as washing or medication. If your mum or dad needs both, tell us and we'll talk through what fits.
Will it be the same person visiting each time?
Familiarity is the whole point, so we always aim to send the same companion. We match them to your mum or dad's personality from the start, and they're the one who keeps coming back. Occasionally, for reasons like holiday or illness, someone may need to cover a visit, but we'll always let you know in advance.
How much does it cost?
Visits are typically £25 to £35 per hour, depending on the type of support and time of day. Call us or message us on WhatsApp for an exact figure based on what your mum or dad needs.
Is there a minimum number of visits?
No. Visits can be as often, or as occasional, as suits your family.
What areas do you cover?
Huddersfield.
Are your companions checked and insured?
Yes. Every companion is personally interviewed face to face, with right to work, ID and proof of address checked before they join the team, and we hold public liability insurance. We offer companionship rather than personal or medical care, so we're not required to be CQC registered.
My dad says he doesn't need anyone. What do I do?
That's really common, and it doesn't mean he wouldn't benefit from it. A lot of families start with a gentle first visit, framed as company rather than care. Give us a call and we can talk through how to raise it.
Can you help with dementia care?
We offer dementia friendly companionship where it's appropriate to our training and your loved one's needs. Get in touch to talk through your situation.
